Fixed appliances more commonly known as “Braces” is a tool to move teeth. There are many types of appliances available in the market. Some do better than others with more control and precision in experienced and well-trained hands. Of late, a quick fix option promoting short-term orthodontics, is being publicised. Six Month Smiles treatment is just one example of “short term orthodontics,” which claims to straighten crooked teeth over such a short period of time.

Short-term orthodontic treatment generally focuses on the alignment of the front teeth and does not concern itself with how the upper and lower arches come together. The public is cautioned against the prescription of short-term orthodontics as the key to the results you will receive from any treatment lies in the training, experience, and talent of the dentist providing it and it is not in the brace which is essentially a sophisticated tool to straighten the front teeth.

There are many reported cases in which these “short-term” braces were unsuccessful. These are usually where there is an undiagnosed problem with the bite where the upper front teeth do not overlap the lower front ones well and flaring of the front teeth occurs.

The public is advised to seek proper consultation with an orthodontist before embarking on a course of short-term orthodontics.
