We have come to realise that the general public oftentimes do not appreciate the difference between an Orthodontist and a Dentist. The difference is mainly based on the level of education and experience. This is compounded by common practice that many general dentists offer orthodontic treatment with braces or clear aligners after taking a few non-clinical based weekend courses in hotels organised by traders. For orthodontic care, the MAO does not recommend that you risk seeing someone who is not an orthodontist.
Whilst we understand that there are many dentists offering various forms of orthodontic treatment, what initially appears to be “cheaper” do not work out to be so at the end of the day. There are also many alternative “one method for everyone” options being sold. Many of these treatments are marketed such that patients avoid the use of conventional braces. Some offer and claim quick, rapid or fast treatments such as “Fast Braces,” “Six month orthodontic treatment” etc. Many of the courses that general dentists attend to learn more about orthodontics are for only a day or two and are not evidence based. When the results promised to the patient turn out to be unacceptable, they will propose more treatment which are often corrective treatment and are more costly. Your dental and periodontal health may also be at risk.
Orthodontists are the ONLY specialists who can accurately give you an informed opinion on the best orthodontic options for your teeth and deal with any difficult issues and unexpected outcomes to help you achieve your desired smile and more importantly, a “good bite”, one that is long lasting.
